Stockton
Stockton has very little left of any of its Asian American heritage sites, to reflect the Chinese, Japanese and Filipino communities that have lived there. The Nippon Hospital (Bryant Hotel) is the only landmark of its once large Japantown, which was filled with 1,386 Japanese residents in the 1930s. By 1940, the town had 50 hotels, 31 community organizations, 21 markets, 19 restaurants, 6 sewing schools, over 20 professional services, and over 150 other businesses. With only 2.3% extant of its pre-war buildings, the historic photo display filling the hallways of the Stockton Buddhist Church annex building is the only reminder of its former heyday.
