California Japantowns - Exploring the preservation of history, culture, and community...

Florin

Early Japanese immigrants found work in the strawberry fields and grape vineyards of Florin in the early 1900s. By 1941, there were 9 companies operating shipping and packinghouses to support the Japanese farmers. With the exception of 3 Japanese schools, the small town essentially had one of each, a Buddhist church, a Christian church, a fish market, a tofu store, an ice cream parlor, a doctor, and other services. While only a handful of the historic storefronts remain, the historic church buildings and former East Florin Grammar School remain as a reminder of the former town.
