Santa Barbara
Reconstructing the 18th century Spanish presidio permanently displaced what little remained of Santa Barbara's Japanese American community. A modest town of 500 in 1940 offered 3 hotels, 4 florists, 4 markets, 3 nurseries, 3 restaurants, 3 garages, 2 churches, and various services such as cleaning, laundry, and shoe repair. All that remains is a flower shop, a shoe repair, and the site of Japanese American News and Gospel Home.
