California Japantowns - Exploring the preservation of history, culture, and community...

Guadalupe

A midway stop via railway from Los Angeles to San Francisco was the small farming town of Guadalupe, a seasonal destination for Japanese migrant workers. In 1935, the town was teeming with 877 Japanese who worked the fields and packinghouses of thriving produce growers, which included prominent Issei farmers, Minami and Aratani. For the farm laborers, the small town offered 4 hotels, 1 boarding house, 12 restaurants, 3 pool halls, 3 doctors, 2 fish markets and over a dozen more stores. Located off Highway 1, but bypassed by larger Highway 101, Guadalupe is a forgotten Japantown, yet a visit to Mastani Market or the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center might tempt the curious as to its former Nikkei history.
