Expanding out from Guadalupe, the town of Santa Maria offered a center for the agricultural laborers that reached 571 by 1935. Both a Christian church and Japanese school attracted young families who wanted to instill family and cultural values. While 64.3% of the pre-war businesses that included 3 hotels, 4 doctors, 2 restaurants, 6 stores, and numerous small businesses now support the predominantly Latino community, the former Japanese school at 134 N. Western Ave remains forlorn on a residential street, with its fate unknown.
